Prayers for 5 April 2020
Dear Living Faith Uniting Church members and friends,
We are unable to join together physically today to share in Communion. However, we are ALWAYS joined to each other through God’s Holy Spirit. So, in our “Common-Union” we are able to utter the prayers below on this special Palm Sunday as God’s family.
Feel free to pray these out loud; or quietly contemplate what the words of the prayers mean to you. You may like to call a friend and pray these prayers together over the phone. Either which way, our “gathering” separately is honoured by God just as much as when we gather together in person.
Take a moment to bring to God anything you want to confess…
God’s grace is sufficient to forgive our sins and to give us a new chance.
PRAYER 1 – Taken from The Methodist Service Book (Herts, U.K., 1975)
The Way of the Cross (Palm Sunday Prayer)
Almighty and Everlasting God, who in your tender love towards humankind sent your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, to take upon Him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross, that all humankind should follow the example of His great humility; grant that we may both follow the example of His passion, and also be partakers of His resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
PRAYER 2 (Author Unknown)
Our Heavenly Father
We who have come to know your love during the years of our earthly pilgrimage, come to you in at this present time of turmoil in the world and seek your aid.
We realize that it is not within human power to understand all that happens as one progresses towards eternity. We cannot understand the mystery of illness or death. Yet, our Father, we do know that you are an all-wise and all-understanding God. Because of our faith in you, we have the assurance that all things work together for good to them that love you.
Grant that none of us will become bitter or hardened by these difficult experiences happening in the world. Let us realize anew that you are the Creator, Director and Sustainer of all life. Let our minds and hearts be filled with love for you and your cause in the world. May we realize that passage through this world is necessary for the privilege of dwelling among your saints in the world to come.
Even in anguish or fear, we look to you with thankfulness. We are especially thankful for the life you have given. We ask you to grant your blessings on our church family, may each member be provided with the strength and comfort which is needed to sustain them in this time of anxiety and uncertainty. Let each look to you in perfect faith and receive your kind and gracious peace.
We pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
